I work as a printmaker, painter, and book artist. My work is about nature, its resilience and adaptive qualities, its disappearance and neglect.  I am drawn to water for its design and abstract qualities, but most especially because it is a resource that is being commodified, a power that is destructive by its absence and presence, a life force, and a constantly changing source of beauty and pleasure.  I focus on wetlands and land surrounding water and its importance to the future of waterways.  Starting with observation, the final images are culled from memory, shaped by my own experiences and perspectives.

I often work in series, finding it an excellent way to explore many possibilities concerning one theme.  My attraction to printmaking comes from a fascination with the many ways I am able to play with images, determining the appropriate processes, juxtaposing shapes and colors, and changing the feel of my work by the aesthetic choices I make


Cynthia Back is a printmaker and painter who has exhibited widely throughout the United States and Europe.  She is the recipient of numerous awards and honors including a Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation grant in 2005, a Puffin Foundation grant in 2003, a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant in 1996; fellowships to The Ballinglen Arts Foundation Ltd., Co. Mayo, Ireland in 1997 and 1999, Fundacion Valparaiso, Spain in 2000, Helene Wurlitzer Foundation in 2000, The Cill Rialaig Project, Co. Kerry, Ireland in 1999, and The MacDowell Colony in 1994.  Her work is included in numerous private and corporate collections, including The Library of Congress, Washington, D.C., the New York Public Library, the Newark Public Library, Newark, New Jersey, the Free Library of Philadelphia, and The New-York Historical Society.  Ms. Back received her B.F.A. at Minneapolis College of Art and Design and studied at Wimbledon School of Art and St. Martin’s School of Art in London, England.  She currently lives in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania.
