Statement
This work is rediscovering and redefining accepted symbols and archetypes, addressing issues of gender, domestic relationships, social expectations and class. By layering images and meanings, I create spaces that foster and encourage the definition of new identities. The home and the domestic become an arena for this action to take place, functioning as both the setting for the exploration of roles and as a structure or institution to be redefined.
Pattern in the work is both literal and metaphoric. The domestic is echoed in the use of materials; cotton, flocking, tyvek, and construction supplies. Mass production and patterning are reflected in both the use of materials and the activity of reproduction.
My influences and interests include: Americana, thrift stores; hand crafts; sustainable food; mid century cookbooks, clothing patterns; textile design; diy/grassroots political and artistic activities. I am interested in the means that explain, justify and create alternatives to the status quo.
