Statement
For the past twenty-eight years I have been using the copier to create and edition my books , of which there are now more than sixty-five. The copier has allowed me to be in total control of the creative and publishing process at a cost I could afford. The downside of this method is that the distribution and sale of those books was also up to me. Fortunately, there are now several bookstores and galleries to which one can turn for that service.
My most popular workshop is called, Multiples and Mantras. That was a very accurate description of my approach to creating xerographic books. “In the beginning…” there was a machine which could produce copies of a single image, instantly. That workshop limits each student to choosing a single image, with some text, from a newspaper or magazine. Each student prints twelve copies of that clipping, and “meditates” upon it to create a visual narrative, in an accordion fold form, from those twelve copies.
I am committed to books that say something about the human condition. I was born in Brooklyn in 1932, and trained as a painter, printmaker, and photographer at Bard College( BA)and State U. of Iowa (MFA). I have traveled widely, and received a number of grants, National Endowment for the Arts( Bookmaking), and fellowships , Huntington Hartford Foundation (Printmaking). Almost all of my work deals with political, social, and existential issues. My work is represented in many private and institutional collections both here and abroad ,and has been exhibited in numerous venues over the past thirty years.
Biography
I was born in Brooklyn, in 1932. After numerous moves necessitated by the post depression economy, we settled in Flatbush, Brooklyn. I attended Midwood High School , received my BA from Bard College, and my MFA in Printmaking from the State U. of Iowa where I studied with Maurizio Lasansky.
I am married and have 2 children. In 1982 I founded the International Society of Copier Artists. More than 1000 artists contributed work to the assemblage project, the I.S.C.A. Quarterly of xerographic prints and artists books. The Quarterly holds the distinction of having been the longest running assemblage project in the world. The last issue of the Quarterly appeared in 2002. I have taught many workshops in xerographic bookmaking, and also taught English as a Second Language for the ILGWU, Brooklyn College, Kingsborough College, Mercy College, and the Borough of Manhattan College. Bookmaking for ESL students was one of my prime focuses. Each student kept a diary in English and used family photos to illustrate their lives.
