Blue Chaos is a one of kind silkscreen cutout that was printed at the Lower Eastside Printshop during my keyholder residency in 2007/08. I later cut it out to enhance the shadow and negative spaces. In the repetition of the printing on top of each other with subtle tonal variations which enhanced the organic qualities and sense of movement in the invented floating botanical form.
Insomnia, the artist book includes images from the installation, Run-On Sentences and the drawing series, Insomnia in the Other Garden. These images in combination provide a loose narrative of the artistsâ€™ anxiety, late night ponderings, chaotic dream sequences, and working process.
The four part series, Insomnia in the Other Garden was created for the 2009 Women Artists International Biennale in Incheon, Korea. The Insomnia in the Other Garden series is comprised of watercolor, soot, silkscreen, and cut paper drawings.
Mary Ting is a Chinese American visual artist with a studio practice that includes: installation, sculpture, video, cut paper, printmaking and drawing. Her work takes inspirations from folk culture, natural history museums, memories and literature.
Ting is the recipient of two New York Foundation for the Arts fellowships (2001, 2007), Lambent Fellowship in the Arts (2003-06), Puffin Foundation, the Ruth Chenven Foundation Award, and a Pollack Krasner Foundation grant among others. She has also been a resident at the Macdowell Colony, Millay Colony, Soaring Gardens Artist Residency, and an Alden B. Dow Creativity Center fellow. Mary has also been a participant in the Dieu Donne Workspace program, Bronx Museum Artist in the Marketplace, Henry Street Settlement AIR Program and the Lower Eastside Printshop Special Editions program.
Mary Ting recent solo shows include: Witch, Whore, Widow at metaphor contemporary art; The Sleep of Reason Breeds Madness at Dean Project, LIC; and Excerpts from the Dysfunctional Forest at the Kentler International Drawing Space, all in the New York metropolitan area. Her work will also be included in the 2009 International Womenâ€™s Biennale at Incheon, Korea.
She teaches sculpture and drawing at CUNY @ John Jay College and is also part of the graduate faculty at Transart Institute MFA in New Media, Berlin//NY. Mary has a BFA from Parsons School of Design, a diploma from the Central Academy of Fine Art, Folkart Research Institute in Beijing, China, and a MFA from the Vermont College of Fine Arts. Mary also writes poetry and non-fiction and resides in New York City.
