Tom Phillips was born in 1935. He is a paint, printmaker, writer, composer and curator currently based in his hometown of London. He has an affinity to the written word and the form of the book. He is perhaps best known for his work entitled A Humument: a Treated Victorian Novel which started in the 1960’s but was first published in 1970. In 1997 Phillips curated Africa: The Art of a Continent for the Royal Academy. The exhibition later traveled to venues such as Martin Gropius Bau, Berlin and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. He is also an Honorary Fellow of St Catherine’s College, Oxford, Leeds University.
