Noted poet Phillis Levin’s delicate lament End of April is brought to life in this sculptural book edition. The viewer is initially lured by a custom cube crafted of fine holly & cherry woods. Upon opening the box, a precious book is found nested inside an elegantly hand blown glass egg which rests comfortably in one’s hand. The miniature book, with poem letterpress printed on handmade papers, opens to reveal the beauty of nature and heartache of lost love.
Broken Ground is an eruption of spontaneous writing interwoven throughout bold painting. Nine diary entries meditate on youthful desire, lost loves, and a struggle for self-knowledge. The shifting moods of the Artist’s prose, embedded in paintings composed of ink blots, splotches of color, and a maze of personal iconography, draws the viewer into a world at once unique and universal, in this evocative quest for emotional growth and insight.
Mindy Belloff produces fine printed book editions at Intima Press in New York City. She received a Master of Arts degree from New York University. A mixed-media installation and book artist, Ms. Belloff creates layered personal narratives, sensitively integrating text and imagery. In some, painted or photographic images and text communicate with the intimacy of a diary. In others, the visual immediacy of monoprinting or the spatial dynamics of sculpture are combined with historic letterpress printing within a book sequence. Book arts combines the many skills Ms. Belloff has acquired as an artist such as painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, welding, glass blowing, writing, and poetry. It often takes a minimum of 2 years, and usually longer, to create a book from concept through completion.
Ms. Belloff’s books are in the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum National Arts Library, the Library of Congress, National Museum of Women in the Arts, and numerous special collections and archives. Installation exhibitions include the Bronx Museum of the Arts and the Sculpture Center. Ms. Belloff is a MacDowell Fellow and recipient of a 2003 National Endowment for the Arts Residency Book Grant. She currently teaches book arts and letterpress printing as an Adjunct Professor at Long Island University Palmer School of Library Science and through the Education Department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. As the founder of Studio-on-the-Square in New York City, offering art of the book and letterpress printing workshops and services, Ms. Belloff strives to preserve the history of the book while keeping the future of printing alive by teaching hundreds of students at her Studio.
