Diary of Sound, 2001
A special kind of diary: At certain times of the day Gerhild Ebel recorded sounds and noises of daily life and transformed them into pictures, using an electro-acoustic process. It is this same original, creatively idiosyncratic collaboration of meaning and form that not only gives Ebel’s works an unmistakeable signature but also offers a guarantee for their conceptually logical realisation.

In the course of the last two decades the artist has presented one of the most remarkable oeuvres in the field of conceptual art realized in book art and has found her way into many of the world’s most important collections of such art as a result.

Aspects of content and form are being interwoven more and more obviously with interdisciplinary strategies. It is possible that a study of phytopathology in Halle, which Gerhild Ebel completed with a diploma in 1990, pointed the way for her artistic work. The link between idea and form is always direct and without embellishment. Her programmatic approach to her works is also thought through. However, Ebel’s works always retain a backward link tempered by subtle humour, which does not exclude her literary work.

The variations combining text and image are manifold and can also be found in the original graphic editions and the original graphic encyclopedia published by Gerhild Ebel, in which a correspondence of brilliant contributions by renowned authors, artists, and composers around the world gives rise to a fascinating whole on the respective subject.


Gerhild Ebel studied plant pathology at the Martin-Luther-Universität Halle and worked afterward as a scientist.

Since the middle of the ’80s, in addition to experimental literature, she has increasingly developed artworks on the border of language, image, and science (installations, paper cutouts, artist books, objects, graphics, collages).

Among other things, she works with communication in the age of information, personality psychology, and political subjects and, since the end of the ’80s, has published numerous books as well as unique pieces.

Since 1990, she has been a publisher of original graphic editions and of an encyclopedia of experimental literature and art, thereby uniting internationally famous artists and authors.

Gerhild Ebel has received various scholarships and art awards. She is a member of the artists group 13+ and lives as a freelancer in Halle and Berlin, Germany.
