A Valentine to CENTRAL BOOKING
February 8, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - February 25, 2018 @ 6:00 pm
A gallery promoting experimentation where art meets science is both rare and valued by many inspired by art that strives to move beyond commercialism. Exchange of ideas as well as virtuosity and experimentation became a platform for engaging art/science panels, performances and activism politically and culturally.
In this spirit, Farhana Akhter recounts the continuous dialogue among earth, sky, universe and all interconnected living creatures: a universal dialogue of deep understanding. C Bangs explores the archetype of the Green Man, male archetype of oneness with the Earth vs. the hydrogen bomb and how it will interconnectedly annihilate the web of life. Denise Buckley’s bronze sculptural works ‘three heads and a torso’ take emotional depth and personal interpretation in a different direction. Her technique blurs the boundaries between clay and metal, revealing devotion to both craftsmanship and expression. Sachie Hayashi paints the harmony and energy of nature on intricate structures. Nina Kuo & Lorin Roser collaborate in weaving many mediums to create intricate patterns of images, thereby connecting virtual, conceptual, ceramic and found objects. Kasumi brings intense energy to a physical mash-up of Japanese and European imagery collages. Her work derives from books as a technology which disseminates “the chunks of symbols with which our cultures communicate their deepest and most amorphous cogitations.” To these she adds a video montage-in-a-box, and a scarf embraced by her iconic imagery. Rita Montlack’s Obliteration Wall: Yayoi Kusama, is a wall-sized matrix barrier of cleverly manipulated and embellished images of Kusama, the self-described “heretic of the art world,” and her work. Yet, each placed square is an artwork onto itself. Agnes Murray explores the interplay between surface and illusion of space in her enticing monotypes. Flash Rosenberg greets us with a knowing wink as her sly cartoon drawings cleverly interpret the quirks and frustrations of life on earth. Finally, Blossom Verlinsky’s canvases glisten with the inner structure of stones, minerals, metals and gemstones sometimes with precise yet delicate folds suggesting those of the earth, itself.
Promoting experimentation where art meets science is both rare and valued by many. Exchange of ideas as well as virtuosity and experimentation has come to define CENTRAL BOOKING as a platform for engaging art/science panels, performances and political and cultural activism. As the nature of CB’s presence evolves, its vision and legacy endures.
