Desirée Alvarez /Sarah Plimpton: A Reading Performance

CENTRAL BOOKING presents two of our Artist’s Book Gallery artists, Desirée Alvarez and Sarah Plimpton, who combine the visual and poetic in their own distinctive ways. This afternoon event will feature their book work and their work in books.
Desirée Alvarez is a New York-based multidisciplinary artist and writer born in New York City. Alvarez’s experience of the world as a visual artist drives her writing. She has published in Black Renaissance Noire, The Iowa Review, Prairie Schooner, Boston Review and Denver Quarterly. Alvarez was awarded a 2013-2014 Workspace Residency from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, a Poets House Emerging Poets Residency Fellowship (2012), the Glenna Luschei Award from Prairie Schooner, University of Nebraska (2012), a Pushcart Prize nomination (2012) and two New York Foundation for the Arts fellowships. She has also received the Academy of Arts and Letters Metcalf Award and the European Capital of Culture Award. Alvarez received her M.F.A. from School of Visual Arts and a B.A. from Wesleyan University. She currently teaches at CUNY.
Sarah Plimpton was born in New York City and divides her time between New York and France. She attended Smith College, Harvard Medical School and Pratt Institute in Manhattan. She works in several visual media: oil painting, printmaking and artists’ books, and is also a poet. Besides CENTRAL BOOKING, three galleries show her work on a regular basis – June Kelly in New York, Ute Barth in Zurich and the Ober Gallery in Connecticut. She has published two book of poems: L’Autre Soleil, The Every Day and a novel: Hurry Along. Her poems have been published in the Denver Quarterly, the New York Review of Books and The Paris Review. Her artist’s book’s are in public collections such as The Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), The New York Public Library and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
