The artists in Paper Monument engage in the act of creating various narratives using a material that has been in existence since the 2nd Century B.C., with origins in China. It is one of the most versatile materials used in art making to express initial ideas which can be developed into paintings and sculpture, transformed into artist’s books or cutup to resemble something entirely different. The twenty artists in Paper Monument investigate the many ways one can use this material to fulfill thoughts which reflect family history, cartoons, physical movement, the cosmos, domestic objects, recycling and landscape. If there is any one reason for choosing paper work as the theme of this exhibition, it would have to be the purity and freedom associated with those working with this material.
