The Creature from the Bleached Lagoon
Margaret Craig
Saturday, March 18, 2023, 4pm
at BWAC
481 Van Brunt Street, Door 7
Red Hook, Brooklyn, NY 11231
In the tradition of Japanese kaiju films such as Godzilla and Hollywood B movies, Margaret Craig presents a mixed media performance of destruction and evolution. The creature evolved from repurposed plastic trash and cast acrylic etchings and, animated by the artist, interacts with spectators and the general public outside the exhibition venue. The piece reflects the importance of human impact on estuaries and how human interference may lead to unimagined results.
This presentation is held in conjunction with On the Waterfront: A View from the Coast (Line), a CENTRAL BOOKING exhibition in collaboration with the New-York Historical Society, featuring installations by fourteen artists. On view from March 3-April 23, Saturdays and Sundays, 12-6pm and by appointment.
The 44-page catalog for On the Waterfront: A View from the Coast (Line), including a Preface by Margi Hofer, Museum Director of the New-York Historical Society, is available for viewing and purchase online and at the New-York Historical Society Museum Shop.
Margaret Craig has completed the Blue Star Berlin Residency program and is Professor Emeritus of Printmaking and Paper at the Southwest School of Art in San Antonio, TX. She received a degree in Biology Secondary Education, a BS in Art and an MA in Painting from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Texas at San Antonio.
