STATEMENT
Western Vertical Script began nearly 40 years ago as a solution to writing text on sculpture without the act of reading immediately hijacking all visual attention. Now, housed in a multi-functional artist’s book, the calligraphy stands on it’s own as a flexible, legible, vertical script that facilitates our language’s visual poetry.
BIOGRAPHY
Attracted to Asian calligraphy for years, Alan came late to studying Japanese calligraphy with Tsuyoshi Takamori for a little over two decades. He explains it was, in part, because he never could draw well & calligraphy is basically copying. Now many, many years later it’s become clear that what started as a side project – working out a vertical English script – seems to be something no one else appears to have bothered trying… go figure.
