BIOGRAPHY Martha Hayden, painter and printmaker, is a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She received a Foreign Traveling Fellowship from the Art Institute to study in Austria with the Expressionist painter, Oskar Kokoschka where she won his top award for her work.
Ms. Hayden divides her time between New York City where she maintains a studio at Kenkelebra House, and Sharon, Wisconsin. In New York, she has had one person shows at Reggio Gallery, The Interchurch Center and La Guardia College. She has participated in shows at the National Arts Club, National Academy Museum, City Museum of New York, New York Transit Museum, and Bowery Gallery. In Wisconsin, she has had one-person exhibitions at the West Bend Museum, The Wustum Museum (Racine) and the Wisconsin Arts Foundation in Madison. An exhibition was held at Dartmouth College in 2003.
She is included in many public collections, including those of the Museo do Arte Moderno, Sao Paulo, Brazil, California College of Arts and Crafts and the Brooklyn Museum. Corporate collections include Amoco, GTE, Ameritech, Frito-Lay and Best Western.
She has shown at the Art Institute of Chicago, Milwaukee Museum of Art, Wustum Museum in Racine (WI), Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio, El Paso (TX) Museum and many others. Her work has been in over 450 regional and national exhibitions.
She has received grants from the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation of Taos, New Mexico, I-Park, East Haddam, CT, The Joyce Dutka Foundation, and in 2004 and 2006 was invited by the Maryland Institute of Art, College of Design to paint at Chateau Klots, Rochefort-en-terre, Brittany, France. In 2008, she painted at Moncontour, Brittany, and had fellowships at Cill Rialaig, Ballinskellig, Kerry, Ireland, and at The Museum of the Center of Europe, Vilnius, Lithuania.
