STATEMENT
My recent work addresses various topics of concern such as global warming and gun violence with imagery, minimal text and a sense of absurdity. I enjoy experimenting with formats and materials and have recently used wool felt, aluminum and found material from Arctic expeditions as part of the binding structure. Many of the recent works expand to occupy a sculptural space when opened. Repetition and variation intrigue me. When words or images repeat with variations attention to nuance is engaged. In Arctic Anxiety, for example, numerous empty specimen cards have interesting remnants of irregular mucilage stains begin to read as markings, and the absence of the actual specimens evokes vanishing biomes.
BIOGRAPHY
Sarah Stengle is a visual artist who creates artist’s books, works on paper, wearable book art and sculpture. Her studio is in Saint Paul, Minnesota and she is a teaching artist at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts. She received a BFA in Metal-smithing from Carnegie Mellon University and and MFA in sculpture from the School of Visual Arts. She works with a wide range of media and in addition to the book arts, she has a long standing interest in mathematical art. Her work is included in many collections including the Fogg Museum at Harvard, Yale’s Beineke Library, The Pierpont Morgan Library, the British National Library, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art’s rare book collection.
