This octagonal book, with text in Spanish and English, offers the viewer a series of allies for the increasingly dangerous passage across the desert regions of the US–Mexico border. It is inspired both by the struggles of people driven to take dangerous risks in this harsh environment and by the Native cultures of the Southwest.
Art Hazelwood has lived on and off on the Zuni Reservation in New Mexico for years. There, small carved animal figures called fetishes carry a suggestion of protective animal spirits. The animals in the book were not drawn from photos or direct observation. Instead, Hazelwood set out to picture each animal as he saw it in his mind. Like the fetishes, these animal helpers each offer a specific kind of aid: the Desert Tortoise provides water, and the Kangaroo Rat provides night vision.
Hazelwood offers this small fetish object, a book of twelve animals in woodcut with screenprinted text and borders, to all the young travelers now seeking to reach family or escape other dangers at home.
