Even the Rain, 2008

“I allowed myself permission to play with someone else’s words in ‘Even the Rain’ only because this specific poem embeds a tribute to another poet. It is already a tribute within a tribute, why shouldn’t I become, down the chain of feeling, a grateful caboose?

Agha Shahid Ali uses E E Cummings’ lovely phrase from ‘somewhere I have never traveled, gladly beyond’ and weaves it into a container native to his home culture – the Ghazal. To my mind, the repetition and the reveal inherent in the accordion format echo much like couplets, there is an existing ask for visual rhyme and continuity. I loved that the poet’s name, their ‘handwriting’ is an intrinsic element of this poetic form.” – Ellen Wiener
