Rosenberg’s reinterpretation of her Brooklyn Shadows painting, Improvement of Gowanus Bay /New York Bay, Corps of Engineers Map, 1892, forms the basis of the imagery, with glimpses of both the iconic and everyday found along the coast woven throughout. The warm tonality intones a feeling of the past, of pieces of memory revealing and vanishing as the scroll unravels. The back of the scroll is a colonial map of the Bay painted on a commemorative plate, marking the harbor at an even earlier point in history. The scroll is housed in a wooden box, decorated with leather and a map, emulating a treasure chest.
